Aaron Zhao is an award-winning filmmaker and medical student (M.D.) at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, where he is pursuing a career in ophthalmology.
Before medical school, Zhao studied Visual Arts at Duke University, with additional training in Documentary Studies and further artistic studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
Aaron’s latest film, OUR INDELIBLE FRUIT, follows him and his father as they return to their rural Chinese village after twenty years in America to visit his terminally ill grandmother. The film reflects his growing interest in the human dimensions of medicine, including cultural approaches to truth-telling, end-of-life care, and the emotional landscapes of patients and families caught between worlds.
